Reflection of 3-11-10

I really enjoyed going over different benifits in class today. I have had several questions that ive never been able to ask, that i was able to.

Reflection of 3-2-10

I found the time learning about the places to do research very helpful. now i know where to look for info on my topic.

chap 14 review

I think that unions are a little outdated and in many instances are more of a henderence then a help. most of the problems that unions helped with way back when they were created have be fixed with current laws and organizations like osha

chap 13 review

more companies should provide life insurance to their employees but even more I think that more employers should take a small life insurance policy on their employees to help cover the cost of hireing and training a new person to take over that position.

chap 12 review

I think that piecework rate would be the most effective way to do pay, as long as there is a inspection process at the end. the faster you work the more you should get paid, because you are bringing in more money to the company.

Chap 11 review

I'm a little torn on weather i think that minimum wage is entirely a good idea. the pros, it garntees that people that work will at least make this much excluding many commisions based jobs. it is suppost to be set up so that someone working full time could live on that.

cons in most places the minimum wage gets out dated really fast and it takes a long time for it to be adjusted. I also think that it plays a part in inflation. the higher the minimum wage gose the more companies have to raise their prices to compensate for the money they have to pay their employees.

Chap 10

Job withdrawal I think is the most distructive of all. if someone simply dosn't come in you can see and know that they are not there and you know that you need to fill in. but if some one comes in and simply dose a crapy job or do nothing at all. if stuff needs to follow a strict schedual having someone do a crapy job that needs to be redone later will set you back and ultmantly cost money.

Chap 9

Coaching seems to be one of those things that managers have a hard time doing. at least in my experiance. they never seem to have the time to give me any one-on-one time and feedback. and the most they do to help me learn for myself is to put me on the online training and leave it up to me to find someone that is more of an expert to ask questions to.
I know that it depends on the job but as far as setting goals is it better to set day to day goals or week or month?

chap 8

Methods for measuring preformance
I found this section very intreaging mainy because retail is all about measuring performance. but what method is best and how dose it depend on the company?

Im used to a simple ranking system that over all is not really fair for our place.

refection of the 2/4/10

I enjoyed the presentation that was given but i wasn't sold on the candy he brought it was a little to hard for my liking. there was a lot of good information given about how they train their people. they hit on all the major ways of training (computer, lecture, demo, simulation) one of the things I thought was a really good idea was to send out a online training before holding a lecture to help get ppl thinking about the topic

refection of the 2/2/10

the hireing procces is a very intresting one. writing a good description is the biggest part of getting the right pool of applicants. once you get them you need to find the best way for your organization to find out about those ppl. social networking would seem to be a very good way to check out your final applicants.

chap 7

Training at my work is the most boaring thing. some corporate person puts togeather something they think will help teach us something but every one that I know just skips though it and guesses at the answers on the test untill they get a passing score. the worst part is they don't test the effectiveness. they just keep piling on the traning. it would be nice if they asked for our opion, if nothing else. I think that finding a quantifiable way of mesuring the effectiveness would be very hard to do in a Corp structure.

chap 6

I do no envy those that have to pick the people that will work for them. pooring over all the resumes/applications looking for just the right person(s). I wish that there was an easier way for both the employer as well as the employee. I have spent a couple days worth of time creating and recreating my resume, and tayloring it to each place i apply.
Resume is a quick and cheep way for employers to filter the ppl that want the job, but is very bias and in many cases have unaccurate information in it.
References help but you'll only find ppl that will only say good things.
BG checks will compleatly unbias but most of wont paint a clear picture of the person.
employment tests in my opinon is a great tool to use to see a little more of the persons personality.
work sample see what they can really do.
and then the interview got to love those =)

refection of the 28th

after working retail for 6 years now I know how much i hate it and most of the reasons have to do with this one little section in this book. job enlargment, job extention and job rotation. managers have to deal with so many things all the time that they never really feel many of those thing (or so it seems) but having my ideas rejected time after time has really broken my spirit and i become a drone. I know that they have to deal with a lot of bratty teens that have no ambition but im not like that at all and i know that they know that. they could give me a few trys at being a manager and see how I do.

chap 5 blog

one section that i thougt was really intresting was the section about Early-retirement programs. this caught my eye because my dad is retireing and is having a very hard time adjusting "into a new way of life" I can see how early retirement couls help push poor preforming older people out but I think the idea of slowly phasing them out is such a better option. not only to help them adjust to having more time away from work but it would also help the buisness slowly fill in that spot.

Refections of 1-26-10

it is always very intresting to hear about the different reasons ppl sue other ppl. the poor city trying to do the right thing by taking the time to make up a test to treat ppl fairly and still was sued. it seems like that things should have gone there way because they were trying to correct a problem. where is there justice? I think that there are a lot of laws that get taken the wrong way, and over compinsate for the few ppl that do the wrong thing.

Chap 4 blog

most of the stuff in this chapter is common sence with a few ineresting facts mixed in. The only problem that i have is the buisness that im planing on starting is a small operation. I did really like the section about job enlargment/ enrichment. the only problem that i really saw with enlargment is when that person leave or advances then you have to get someone to take on that huge load and you might have to hire on 2 ppl to replace that one person. I wish my current job (office depot) would give me a little more enrichment. =(

refection of the 21st

This was a fun class to get togeather with the group and start getting to know eachother. even if we are bigger we seem to get along with eachother well.
it was very ineresting to go over the articals that we all read, and some of the issues that ppl are having with HR. I personaly am really inteasted in the hopital not hireing ppl that use tobaco, since i don't use it I feel that this would be a good change. however i can see how ppl on the flip-side could get very angry about it.
I know a little about the EEO's that we went over. mostly it was just a good review for me

refection of the 19th

-I think that most of us would stay late to watch a snip of Office =). A lot of the internal vs. external hiring I’ve always had the point of view that the internal is always best because you know what you’re getting. But I never really looked at the pros or external.
-My dad has been a very high demand Satellite communications engineer for several decades and at his last job more than anything he was just there to help the new people get the real world experience needed to really excel but in the end it was my dad's EXP that get the project finished.
-I’m glad that education has been such a big drive in our country to get those highly skilled ppl to fill some gaps. I just wish that there was more of a push to get those ppl sitting on their butts living off their unemployment checks filling some of the grunt work tasks that are being pushed off to the Illegal immigrants. Too many ppl are too lazy to do some real work.
-working in retail I know about the lack of Employee encouragement. it seems the only time my boss talks to me is to tell me what to do or what I did wrong. on top of that as much as I suggest really good ideas to my managers I always get told that "that is not the way corporate told us to do it" they have broken my spirit I have become an unsatisfied drone.

blog chap 3

I know that they are important but reading though all the "Acts" was very boaring. one that i have heard about but never paid any attention to is the "Age Discrimination in Employment act" that would be really sucky to be coming up on your retirement and the companie decides that you cost to much and bump you off for a new person that will work for far less money.
Also I hear about OSHA all the time at work but I never really knew what it was there for. its very nice to know that my work is safer because of it.

refection of the 14th

I wasn't in class on the 14th I had to go out of town.
